Kakadu, Northern Territory


Kakadu is a unique place that is popular for camping holidays. It is a large area of Aboriginal land in Australia which contains loads of Australian wildlife and Aboriginal cave paintings which offer some clues to the rich history of the area. Kakadu climate is monsoonal and the best time to visit is during the dry season between June and August. It can be extremely hot and muggy during the wet season.

Kakadu National Park is the home to spacious grasslands, exotic rainforests, lilly-filled billabongs and many rivers and lakes The waterfalls are particularly fascinating during the wet season.There are many exciting landmarks in the area to visit. Coronation Hill is a well known landmark which has come under some scrutiny in recent times due to the large amounts of platinum and palladium found within the hill.

Freshwater and saltwater crocodiles roam the park so it is worth being cautious around swampy areas! The park is also home to several species of snake, so be wary of these too!

It is important to be aware that you will need a permit to camp in this park. There are campsites in the area with all the expected facilities.

Most Kakadu tours leave from Darwin and include walking tours. Taking a 4wd safari tour is a popular way to see the country side and allows you to cover much greater distances than on foot.
